Customers and employees struggled to move around inside Pamela's Salon the past few weeks as toys and clothes covered the floors.
But no one was complaining because the congestion was for a good cause — helping kids at the Ennis Center for Children.
For the fifth consecutive year, the Novi salon has asked its employees and clients to bring in gifts from 100 wish lists, and once again they exceeded their goal by collecting presents for 150 children.
“It was unbelievable,” said Kristin Wiley, employee at Pamela's Salon. “Nothing put you in more of a Christmas spirit, especially at the end when you walked into the salon and it was totally overwhelming.” Salon Owner Pamela Yagiela said she views her business as a “vehicle to reach a lot of people,” and says it's fun to see how excited people are when they bring in their gifts. “It's so awesome,” she said. “A lot of these kids don't have a prayer in their lives and this is one day that gives them hope.”
Throughout the last few months, people have been dropping off their gifts to the salon for the specific child they chose. As the deadline neared some items were still missing and people stepped up to deliver. One client, who had already taken on five children, saw that a teenager was asking for boxing gloves and a speed bag and he wasn't going to get them so the man went out and came back an hour later with the items.
Another man, who runs a yoga studio in Birmingham, went to Foot Locker and brought in nearly 30 bags full of sweatpants and sweatshirts.
“It's really awesome seeing how giving people are,” Wiley said.
Yagiela said that her salon has become the biggest contributor to the Ennis Center for Children, and she owes accomplishment that to everyone who gets involved.
“What is really cool is we have people calling in September who aren't clients and say they want to help,” she said. “People are wonderful.”
